In a message themed, “Unwrapping Christmas,” Pastor Chris Brown (northcoastchurch.com) made two startling statements:
“The reason for the season is sin. And the purpose of Christmas was Easter.”
Then he had us turn in our Bibles to two passages that I had heard many times.
The first was Matthew 1: 18-21. Verses 20-21 quote the angel of the Lord, who spoke to Joseph after he learned that Mary was with child. He didn’t know whether he should believe her explanation that the Holy Spirit had impregnated her. (Pretty far fetched?) This is what the angel said to Joseph:
“Joseph, son of David [Joseph was a direct descendant of King David], do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. [Now catch this prophecy] She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus [Yeshua, in Hebrew], BECAUSE HE WILL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS.”
The REASON Jesus was born: TO SAVE PEOPLE FROM THE CONSEQUENCES OF SIN, WHICH ENTERED THE WORLD WHEN ADAM AND EVE CHOSE TO OBEY SATAN RATHER THAN THEIR CREATOR — as Chris Brown would say, “It’s right there on ‘page four’ of the Bible.” Meaning , you can read documentation about “the fall” of mankind in Genesis 4.
The PURPOSE for Jesus’ birth (also known as Christmas) was EASTER.
The Messiah, Jesus, was born to die on a cross and shed his blood to pay THE RANSOM that Satan requires for everlasting souls that he was given jurisdiction over at the fall of mankind!
The second passage that Pastor Chris pointed out was Luke 2:4-14. Again, these are familiar words, but it never occurred to me that within that passage is also THE RESULT of Christmas (Jesus’ birth):
“The result of Christmas is a RELATIONSHIP with God, based on forgiveness [of sin] and freedom [from the eternal consequence of sin — living forever with Satan (see Revelation 20:7-10)]. Because the sin that brings guilt and shame had to be dealt with.” — Chris Brown
The second passage we turned to in our Bibles was Luke 2:8-14:
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
Pastor Chris pointed out that the shepherds would have known about the prophecy of Messiah — One who would be born in human flesh to die for the sin of mankind. After 400 years of silence, when there were no prophetic words from the Lord God of Israel, the angels confirmed that THIS BABY WAS THE ONE that their ancestors had been watching for!
The Jewish people knew that the Messiah MUST BE A DECENDANT OF DAVID, who wrote these words found in Psalm 32:5 …
Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, “I will confess
my transgressions to the Lord.”
And you forgave
the guilt of my sin.
In those few words lie the reason for Christmas, the purpose for Christmas, and the result of Christmas. David recognized his need to be “saved” from sin. So:
- He confessed.
- He asked for forgiveness.
- God forgave the guilt and shame of his sin.
May each of us heed David’s words and be freed from the eternal consequence of sin and death!
* * *
let all the faithful pray to you
while you may be found.”
— David (Psalm 32:6)
