“America is uniquely paralleled to ancient Israel in many ways. From its very conception it was built upon a biblical foundation and dedicated for God’s purposes, as was Israel…. Now, as with ancient Israel, it is falling away from that foundation.”
— Jonathan Cahn
The divine revelation and insight given to Jonathan Cahn and explained through his books, The Harbinger: The Mystery That Holds the Secret to America’s Future (2012) and The Harbinger Companion (2013) begins with ancient history. Amazingly, God’s relationship with direct descendants of a man named Abraham and his wife Sarah – known as the Israelites – is connected in amazing ways with modern-day America.
- The nation of Israel was founded on principles that were given to them by the Lord God to keep them physically, mentally and spiritually safe from evil. The Hebrew Torah (the first 5 books of the Bible’s Old Testament) was written to remind the nation of those boundaries. In return for their adherence to those laws, God promised to provide a supernatural hedge of protection from their enemies.
When the Pilgrims and Puritans first came to America, they intended to establish a nation that would be governed by the principles given to the Israelites by the prophet, Moses, and recorded in the Bible. Later, when George Washington was inaugurated President of the United States of America in the first capitol city of New York, he led members of the first Congress to St. Paul’s Church and prayed for God’s hedge of protection around the fledgling nation.
- God called the Israelites “a stiff-necked people” because they became DEFIANT and insisted on following their own desires rather than faithfully adhering to the basic principles that God had given them to keep them safe. The Lord God foretold through his prophets that the nation would choose to worship false gods that were revered by peoples who surrounded them geographically. They would fall away and resent the hedge of God’s supernatural protection.
For centuries, Americans (collectively) made a conscious effort to establish and adhere to laws of governance based on the principles given to the Israelites by their God. Their leaders looked to the Lord God for supernatural help during times of attack from surrounding nations who demonstrated aggression and DEFIANCE. And America was largely protected from the evil that threatened the nation as a whole. But eventually, individuals began falling away, resenting and abusing those laws.
In response to their DEFIANCE, the Lord God would allow terrorists from Assyria to breach the hedge of divine protection and attack the Israelites. In response to their DEFIANCE, the Lord God would allow terrorist descendants of the ancient Assyrians to breach the hedge of divine protection and attack Americans!
In 732 B.C., the northern kingdom of Israel was attacked by Assyrian terrorists. A majority of the direct descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were captured and dispersed throughout the known world. (These people are often referred to as “the lost tribes of Israel.”) The descendants of Jacob – primarily from the tribes of JUDAH and Benjamin, who remained could have humbled themselves returned to live within the hedge of God’s protection. Instead they were DEFIANT. The prophet Isaiah recorded their collective response:
They said “with pride and arrogance of heart”:
“The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed [gazit in Hebrew] stone; the fig trees [sycamores] have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars [erez in Hebrew].” (Isaiah 9:10)
On September 11, 2001, descendants of ancient Assyrian terrorists – who spoke the ancient language of the Assyrians – attacked America and destroyed the World Trade Center, in New York City – symbol of America’s rise as a superpower. That plot of real estate became known as “Ground Zero.”
At one corner of “Ground Zero” sits a little, old chapel – St. Paul’s Church, where George Washington and members of the first American congress had prayed for God’s protection. As the bricks of the towers around it fell, St. Paul’s Church was protected BY AN ADJACENT SYCAMORE TREE!
On September 12, 2001, America’s Congress gathered in Washington D.C. (the capitol city after NYC) to issue a formal response to the devastating attack the day before that had so dramatically changed the lives of thousands of Americans. Tom Daschle spoke on behalf of the nation.
Here is a portion of his statement:
“This joint resolution we lay down today condemns yesterday’s attacks, expresses our sympathy for the victims, and our support for the President as Commander-in-Chief. The world should know that the members of both parties, in both houses, stand united in this: the full resources of our government will be brought to bear in aiding the search and rescue, and in hunting down those responsible, and those who may have aided or harbored them.
“Nothing can replace the losses that have been suffered. I know that there is only the smallest measure of inspiration that can be taken from this devastation. But there is a passage in the Bible, from Isaiah, that I think speaks to all of us at times like this. ‘The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone; the fig trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.‘“
That is what we will do. We will rebuild and we will recover.
Tom Daschle was completely unaware of the pattern of judgment that had befallen ancient Israel AFTER they had defiantly vowed to rebuild what had been destroyed, using stronger materials (replacing bricks made of clay and straw with hewn stone), and to recover by replanting stronger trees (replacing sycamores with cedars). In the days, months and years following the 9/11 attacks, three words from Isaiah 9:10 were repeated again and again by American leaders – “We WILL rebuild.” According to Jonathan Cahn, “It was the reenactment of an ancient mystery – and bore the most grave of consequences.”
This is what happened next …
THE “GAZIT” STONE* : America’s first act of rebuilding after the 9/11 attacks was to cut a 20-ton rectangular block of garnet-flecked granite from the Adirondak mountainside in upstate New York. It was professionally hewn and ceremoniously placed at Ground Zero on July 4th, 2004 as a cornerstone for the “Freedom Tower” that would eventually rise in DEFIANCE of America’s enemies … and God’s protection.
*Striking down the brick buildings had been an act of divine judgment. Remember the Israelite’s vow to replace the fallen bricks with quarried “gazit” stone?
THE “EREZ” TREE* : The fallen sycamore tree – symbolic of God’s blessings — that had shielded St. Paul’s Church from destruction, was uprooted (just as the sycamores in Israel were uprooted by the Assyrians). A bronze statue of the sycamore’s root system was placed at the end of Wall Street – the symbol of financial and economic power. In 2003, a tree was lowered by crane into the precise spot where the fallen sycamore had stood. It was ceremoniously labeled, “The Tree of Hope.”
*The Isaiah prophecy reads: “The sycamores have been cut down, but we will plant cedars in their place.” The sycamore at Ground Zero was replaced with a tree that’s called “erez” in Hebrew. In English it is translated “cedar.”
Jonathan Cahn explains that “harbingers” such as these are warnings from God to return to him or face judgment. But there are few signs that America’s leaders (collectively) are moving in that direction.
Funny thing … The “gazit” that was supposed to act as the “cornerstone” for the Freedom Tower was quietly trucked to Long Island in 2006. It apparently didn’t fit the revamped architectural plans. And the “erez” tree – the tree of hope – withered and died just two years after it was replanted at Ground Zero.
It’s also interesting to note that Jonathan Cahn has labeled The Eighth Harbinger, “The Utterance.” He explains: “Simply stated, following a calamity caused by God lifting His hedge of protection on a backslidden nation, a nation’s leaders respond with public DEFIANCE. They boast of their country’s resolve and power. They speak of a nation DEFIANT and determined to emerge stronger than ever. THE VOW GIVES VOICE TO A NATIONAL SPIRIT AND SEALS THE NATION’S COURSE.”
Here are some of the “utterances” spoken by America’s leaders concerning the calamity of 9/11:
GEORGE W. BUSH (President of the United States in 2001): “The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger. … These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people have been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.”
RUDY GIULIANI (former Mayor of New York City): “People tonight should say a prayer for the people we’ve lost, and be grateful that we’re all here. Tomorrow, New York is going to be here, and we’re going to rebuild, and we’re going to be stronger than we were before.”
GEORGE PATAKIi: (New York Governor): “Today, we, the heirs of that revolutionary spirit of defiance, lay this cornerstone and unmistakably signal to the world the unwavering strength of this nation, and our resolve to fight for freedom.”
JOHN EDWARDS: (Senator and 2004 candidate for Vice President of the U.S.): “Good morning. Today, on this day of remembrance and mourning [the 3rd anniversary of 9/11], we have the Lord’s Word to get us through: “The bricks have fallen, but we will rebuild with dressed stones. The sycamores have been cut down but we will plant cedars in their place.”
Senator Edwards had no clue that the words he had quoted were actually spoken by a DEFIANT, STIFF-NECKED PEOPLE – the Israelites!
In his first State of the Union address in 2009, PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA arrived at the pinnacle of his speech: “But while our economy may be weakened and our confidence shaken, though we are living through difficult and uncertain times, I want every American to know this: We will rebuild. We will recover. And the United States of America will emerge stronger than before.”
President Obama’s comments were not only in response to what the country had endured following the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001. They followed the close of a Shemitah year and the greatest stock market crash in U.S. history.
So what’s the Shemitah all about?
